| Things have come a long way since the first purpose built Wanderer caravan was made in 1885. During the 1970's the growing interest in caravanning was reflected in the rise of membership to The Caravan club which saw its members rise to over 60,000. In the 1980' s that figure reached 250,000 members and by the 21 st century it represented over 850,000 members and families. It is estimated that a caravan will go out touring on average 6 times a year.
Caravans can be a simple static holiday base or a highly sophisticated vehicle with a high specification interior and as many high tech gadgets as any conventional home. Unfortunately there are around 5,000 reported thefts of caravans each year with many stolen from outside the family home.
