Motoring myths are the car world’s version of the modern legend. They are what we think are facts and yet we do very little research to disprove them. Sometimes our ignorance of what is fact and what is fiction can cost us our license or at least a few points awarded against us.
If for instance you believe that you can out drive the all invasive speed camera, you would need to be doing speeds in excess of 170 mph. Many ‘boy racers’ make an already bad situation worse and with digital cameras they don’t run out of film anymore. Even the most reflective number plates can be read by cameras and the cameras are programmed to take shots across all lanes, so swerving to avoid them may cause a hazard to other drivers and result in another motoring offence along with speeding.
If you are hiring a car and are flashed, the hire company will be only too happy to pass your details onto the authorities. If you are pulled over during the course of your journey by a police officer who has left his hat in the car, you can not claim that you where unsure of the officer’s identity and therefore not liable answer to any charges. As long as the officer is recognisable as such you will have to own up. As a slow driver you can find yourself booked for causing a hazard to other drivers.
If you have managed to accumulate points on your license you should always let them know, it is a requirement and you may find that your future chances of being insured are greatly reduced.
When talking to your insurance company it is always a good idea to be totally honest, you may find that you will still be afforded full cover at a very small additional premium.
